Tune Up and Other Maintenance in Yakima
A classic tune up. What was it? Why do people still ask for them?
On older cars a tune up basically involved replacing points, condenser, spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter if needed, ignition cap and rotor. Then the mechanic adjusted the points, dwell and fuel mixture. You repeat the whole process about one a year!
The tune up is dead
People talk about how easy it used to be…I don’t think it was really that easy. Components are more expensive now, but you go 100,000 miles on a set of spark plugs! The cost of tune up work has actually deflated through times of inflation! So the tune up is essentially dead as a service.

Honesty, not just a tune up
Sometimes people call me and ask for a tune up and just want a price because their car is running bad. Most of the time the “tune up” (which is usually just spark plugs) will not actually repair the problem they have. Some repair shops will just perform the “tune up” because you asked for it. I don’t think that is a very honest way to do business because you just spent your money on the wrong thing and used up your budget for repairing what is really wrong.
Call us and we will get your car sorted out for a price you can live with!
